10/11 is a semi-profit literary agency, operating in Europe, that specialises in contemporary Arabic literature. We are a multi-eyed collective of attentive readers, scouting for the most interesting texts and voices from everywhere the language is spoken.

Haytham El-Wardany was born in Giza, Egypt, and for the last twenty years has lived in Berlin, where he recently received the city senate’s prestigious Stipend for Non-German Literature. His most recent book, Things That Can’t Be Fixed, was awarded the 2021 Cairo Book Fair prize for best short story collection. His first collection, The Unfinished Literature Club, received the 2003 Sawiris Award, and Waking Dream won the Cairo International Book Fair’s 2012 prize for best short story collection (both in Arabic). His experimental prose work The Book of Sleep (Seagull Books) appeared to critical acclaim in English last year. El-Wardany’s understated style, dark imagination and outsider’s perspective have earned him a reputation as one of Egypt’s most talented yet unassuming authors.
هيثم الورداني يكتب نثرا غير سردي عابر للأنواع الأدبية. كتابه الأحدث هو “كتاب النوم” الصادر عن دار الكرمة، القاهرة ٢٠١٧. يتناول الكتاب بشكل شذري جدل النوم واليقظة وعلاقتهما بالوضع ما بعد الثوري. كما صدر له كتاب كيف تختفي ٢٠١٣ عن سلسلة كيف تـ، والذي يتأمل في طبيعة عملية الاستماع، والإمكانات الكامنة في الأنشطة التي تعد سلبية أدار في برلين ٢٠١٨ ورشة كتابة محورها سؤال كيف يمكن كتابة كارثة مع مجموعة من الكاتبات والكتاب الشبان من سوريا وفلسطين ومصر. حصل في ٢٠١٨ على منحة إقامة في هونج كونج ينظمها مركز باراسايت للفنون. ويعمل حاليا على مجموعة قصص قصيرة ستصدر عام ٢٠١٩.

Rasha Abbas writes surreal short stories, combining dream and hyper-realism with a punk aesthetic. A Syrian writer and journalist, she has been based in Berlin since 2015. Her debut short story collection Adam hates TV was awarded at the Damascus Capital of Arab Culture Festival. In 2016 her much-noted collection The Invention of German and her Christmas story A lonesome red glass of Coca Cola were published in German translation by mikrotext, where she also published her short story collection The Gist of it in German. Abbas is currently working on a novel inspired by her family’s history.
رشا عباس تكتب قصصا قصيرة سريالية تمزج بين الحلم والواقعية المفرطة وجماليات الپانك. كاتبة وصحفية سورية، تعيش في برلين منذ عام 2015. حازت مجموعتها القصصية الأولى “آدم يكره التليفزيون”على جائزة الكتاب الشباب في مهرجان “دمشق عاصمة الثقافة العربية”. وفي عام 2016 صدرت مجموعتها القصصية الأشهر “كيف تم اختراع اللغة الألمانية؟” وقصتها “كوب كوكاكولا أحمر وحيد” في ترجمة ألمانية عن دار ميكروتكست، حيث نشرت كذلك مجموعتها القصصية “ملخص ما جرى” بالألمانية. رشا عباس تعمل حاليا على رواية مستوحاة من تاريخ عائلتها.
Hilal Chouman is hailed as one of the foremost literary figures of Lebanon’s post-war generation. He is the author of five novels in Arabic, which capture in various ways the intensity of growing up a millennial against a backdrop of collective trauma and the chaos of economic and social reconstruction. Limbo Beirut (2012) was translated into English and shortlisted for the Saif Ghobash–Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation and longlisted for the PEN Translation Prize. Chouman has been widely praised for his sensitive portrayals of queer life in Lebanon. His uncompromising, deeply-felt writing throws cliché and voyeurism out the window, getting right at the tender heart of what it is to be a man who loves men. Chouman was born in Beirut in 1982 and now resides in Canada.
Sadness in My Heart (novel, 238 pages, 2022): En, De
Salma El Tarzi (b. 1978) is a Cairo-based filmmaker, visual artist, and writer. Her first feature-length documentary, Underground/On The Surface, which explores the local subculture of electro-shaabi music in Egypt, won the 2013 Dubai International Film Festival Muhr Arab Award for Best Director for a Documentary. In her 2020 artist’s-book-cum-memoir, An Attempt to Remember My Face, she revisits her relationship with the women in her life, especially her late mother and two grandmothers. She also co-authored Three Women of Tahrir (forthcoming), a nonfiction graphic novel about the institutional and societal gender-based violence that took place during the first years of Egypt’s 2011 uprising. She is currently working on a graphic novel about rape culture in mainstream Egyptian cinema entitled You Know You Want It.

أحمد ناجى كاتب، وصحفي، وصانع أفلام وثائقية، ومجرم. نشرت له رواية استخدام الحياة عام 2014، التي سُجن لمدة عام بسبب نشر أحد فصولها في مجلة أدبية مصرية، ليصبح أول كاتب مصري يُسجن بتهمة «خدش الحياء العام». ثم نشر رواية والنمور لحجرتي العام 2020، وخلال العام 2022 سينشر رواية النهايات السعيدة. إلى جانب الروايات نشر كتاب حرز مكمكم: القراءة والكتابة في السجن العام 2020، ستصدر ترجمة هذا الكتاب إلى الإنجليزية عن دار مَكسويني في سبتمبر 2023. نال عدة جوائز منها جائزة نادي دبي للصحافة، وجائزة مؤسسة القلم الأمريكية لحرية الكتابة. يعيش حالياً في المنفى في مدينة لاس فيجاس – نيفادا بأمريكا، وهو الآن زميل في معهد BMI التابع لجامعة لاس فيجاس.

Bushra Khalfan is one of Oman’s best known writers. Her novels centre on the twentieth-century history of Oman and the Gulf, especially that of her hometown, Muscat, and seek out the stories of its most marginalised people. Her novel Dilshad was shortlisted for the 2022 International Prize for Arabic Fiction and was awarded the Katara Prize in the same year. She also writes poetry and short stories.

Shady Lewis, born 1978, is an Egyptian novelist and journalist whose writing centres on cultural and political intersections within and beyond the Arab world. He lives in London, where he spent many years employed by the National Health Service and local authority housing departments, working with homeless people and patients with complex needs. He has published three novels to date—The Lord’s Ways (2018), On The Greenwich Line (2019), and A Brief History of Genesis and Eastern Cairo (2021)—each of which engage with the social history of Coptic Christians and trajectories of migration from Egypt to the West.
شادي لويس روائي وصحافي مصري من مواليد 1978، تركز كتاباته على التقاطعات بين الثقافي والسياسي في العالم العربي وخارجه. منذ العام 2006، يقيم في لندن حيث عمل لسنوات عديدة في هيئة الصحة الوطنية وإدارات الإسكان الاجتماعي التابعة للسلطة المحلية، حيث عمل مع المشردين والمرضي ذوي الاحتياجات المعقدة. نشر ثلاث رويات حتى الآن: طرق الرب (2018)، وعلى خط جرينتش (2019)، وتاريخ موجز للخليقة وشرق القاهرة (2020) تتناول كل منها التاريخ الاجتماعي للأقباط ومسارات الهجرة من مصر إلي الغرب.

Mohammad Rabie is a writer of speculative fiction with a flair for turning the bleak tyranny of life in post-revolutionary Egypt into thrilling dystopian drama. He is the author of four popular novels; his debut, Amber Planet (2010) won first prize in the Emerging Writers category of the Sawiris Cultural Awards in 2011. His third, Otared, was shortlisted for the prestigious International Prize for Arabic Fiction and has been translated into English, French, Spanish and Swedish. Harper’s said: “its mazelike structure and sensitive flashes of description are a lesson in the seductions of art.”
محمد ربيع كاتب خيال تأملي، يحوِّل الاستبداد الكئيب للحياة في مصر ما بعد الثورة إلى دراما بائسة ومثيرة. كتب أربع روايات شعبية. حصلت أولى رواياته كوكب عنبر (2010) على جائزة ساويرس الثقافية لشباب الكتاب في العام 2011. رُشحت روايته الثالثة عطارد (2014) للجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية (البوكر) في العام 2016، وتُرجمت إلى الإنجليزية والفرنسية والإسبانية و السويدية. قيل عن الرواية في مجلة هاربر: «هيكلها الشبيه بالمتاهة وومضات الوصف المرهفة درسٌ في إغراءات الفن».

Muhammad Aladdin writes linguistically experimental novels, short stories and screenplays, holding up a brutal mirror to society. He is banned from publishing articles in Egypt. He is one of the most remarkable talents to emerge from the 2000s. He lives in Cairo and Berlin. His work encompasses five novels and four short story collections. His A Well Trained Stray, compared by critics to The Great Gatsby, is available in Italian from Il Seriente (trans. Barbara Benini).
محمد علاء الدين يكتب روايات وقصصا قصيرة ونصوصا سينمائية تتميز بالتجريب اللغوي وتعري واقع المجتمع القبيح. مُنع من نشر مقالاته في مصر. ويعتبر واحدا من أهم مواهب التي بزغت في مطلع الألفية الجديدة. يعيش في القاهرة وبرلين. ويشمل انتاجه الأدبي خمس رويات وأربع مجموعات قصصية. قارن النقاد روايته “كلب بلدي مدرب” بـ “جاتسبي العظيم”، وصدرت بالإيطالية عن دار إلـسرينته في ترجمة لباربارا بنيني.
Mohammad Al Attar writes politically charged plays on the boundary between fiction and documentation. Born in Damascus, he studied English literature and theater studies, completing a master’s degree at London’s Goldsmiths University. Today, he is considered an important chronicler of war-torn Syria. His plays – including Withdrawal, Online, Look at the street…this is what hope looks like, Could You Please Look into the Camera? and While I was waiting – have been staged at various international festivals and venues.
محمد العطار يكتب نصوصا مسرحية محملة سياسيا على الحدود بين الأدب التخيلي والتسجيلي. العطار، المولود في دمشق، درس الأدب الإنجليزي وحصل على درجة الماجستير من جامعة جولدسميث في لندن. يعتبر حاليا مؤرخا لسوريا التي مزقتها الحرب. عرضت مسرحياته، ومنها انسحاب، أونلاين، فيك تطلع بالكاميرا؟، بينما كنت أنتظر، في مهرجانات ومسابقات دولية عديدة.
Sandra Hetzl (Berlin) translates contemporary literature from the Arabic, has been stalking interesting writers as a literary scout for the past 11 years. She has lived in Munich, Naples, Damascus, Beirut and Berlin and is the brains behind 10/11. She graduated with a Masters in Visual Culture Studies from the University of Arts Berlin.

Katharine Halls is an Arabic-to-English translator from Cardiff, Wales. She was awarded a 2021 PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant for her translation of Haytham El-Wardany’s Things That Can’t Be Fixed and her translation, with Adam Talib, of Raja Alem’s The Dove’s Necklace received the 2017 Sheikh Hamad Award and was shortlisted for the Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize. Her translations for the stage have been performed at the Royal Court and the Edinburgh Festival, and short texts have appeared with World Literature Today, Asymptote, Words Without Borders, Adda, Africa is A Country, Newfound, Critical Muslim, The Common, and Arts of the Working Classes, and in various anthologies.
كاثرين هولز مترجمة من العربية إلى الإنجليزية، من ويلز. حصلت على منحة PEN/Heim للترجمة في العام 2021 عن ترجمتها للمجموعة القصصية ما لا يُمكن إصلاحه للكاتب هيثم الورداني. ترجمت – بالاشتراك مع آدم طالب – رواية طوق الحمام للكاتبة رجاء عالم، حصلت تلك الترجمة على جائزة الشيخ حمد للعام 2017، كما كانت في القائمة القصيرة لجائزة سيف غباش بانيبال في العام نفسه. عُرضت ترجماتها للمسرح في رويال كورت ومهرجان إدنبره. نُشرت نصوص قصيرة من ترجماتها في كل من: ورلد لِترِتشر توداي، آسيمتوت، وردز وثاوت بوردرز، آدا، أفريقيا إز آ كنتري، نيوفاوند، كريتيكال مسلم، ذا كومون، آرت أوف ذا وركينج كلاسيس، وفي منشورات ومختارات عديدة.
